Nate Goern is a writer, actor and comic.

Raised in Hong Kong and now based in Austin, Texas; he studied creative writing, professional writing & editing, and acting at Swinburne University of Technology & Actors Center Australia.

Nate’s work spans fiction + screen + stage + commerce — unified by a focus on voice, tension, humor, and the collision of identity and belief in a globalised world.

Screenwriting & Playwriting

Nate served as in-house screenwriter at Picture Works Australia from 2023-2025, writing to spec and consulting on scripts across multiple genres and stages of development. Producers and directors valued his instinct for lived-in dialogue, his ability to structure scenes that hold audience attention, and his reputation as a thoughtful, solution-oriented creative collaborator. He is currently developing a slate of original scripts and screenplays.

Fiction

Nate’s fiction is darkly comic, vivid and unflinching. His stories explore characters on the edge, grappling with their time through a distinctly cinematic lens. His debut novel, Pink Dolphin, tells the story of a Hong Kong teen pulled into the city’s underworld during the 2014 protests, blending grit with spiritual surrealism. It was completed under the guidance of a Booker-Prize winning author and is currently out on submission.

Commercial Writing & Editing

Nate applies the same narrative precision found in his creative writing to his commercial projects, with experience developing brand stories and written communications for Milk Road Markets and its portfolio of partner brands. He is available for select commissions in copywriting, brand narrative, and developmental editing.

Stand-up Comedy

As a stand-up comic, Nate performs material informed by the absurdity and cultural dislocation of his lived experience. He has appeared regularly on open-mic and mixed bill comedy nights across Hong Kong and Australia, honing material shaped by a unique perspective and mischievous wit.

Acting

Nate was classically trained as an actor in Sydney and has performed in numerous stage productions — including several contemporary adaptations of Russian plays. He brings a mix of nuanced character work and instinctive comedic timing to both theatre and screen, with appearances in several television pilots.
